Substrate Card
Use the Substrate Card to record the exact wall surface before artwork goes to print. It gives your décor team one place to note paint type, texture, porosity, and any adhesion concerns found on site.

Surface types this card covers
The Substrate Card page helps Wall Art Designs match artwork to the surface it will be applied to. It is useful when your team must compare wall finishes, adhesion needs and print suitability before sign-off.
Start with the substrate itself, not only the artwork size. New plaster, low sheen painted walls, cement skim, brick, glass, and wrapped boards each need different print and application decisions. In Durban and Cape Town, humidity and salt in the air can affect bond performance, while dusty inland sites often need extra surface prep before vinyl or panels are fitted.
Photographs matter most when they show texture and existing damage clearly. Add one close image of the surface, one wider room view, and a note on whether the finish is freshly painted, chalky, or regularly cleaned. Those details help separate a print issue from a wall issue before approval.
What the card records
Each entry identifies the wall area, substrate condition, intended graphic method, and any limitation at installation stage. That may include moisture near ablutions, heat near shopfront glazing, or rough plaster that could telegraph through thin media. A complete card also helps when matching replacement panels or checking whether a laminate is suitable for wipe-down areas.
Link the Substrate Card to artwork approval and the site file before production starts. Check the final dimensions, mounting method, and room conditions again, then send any changes through the contact form. Include notes where previous vinyl lifted, edges collected dust, or painted surfaces marked easily during removal.
- Paint finish and wall texture logged
- Moisture, dust, and heat risks noted
- Mounting method matched to surface
Humidity, Dust and Power Cuts
Johannesburg projects often involve older painted walls with patch repairs that do not hold adhesive evenly. In Pretoria and Gauteng retail centres, frequent cleaning around entrances can also affect edge performance. Record these site conditions on the card so production and installation teams work from the same surface information.
Coastal installations need extra attention where condensation, sea air, or damp mornings are common. Interior hospitality walls may look sound yet still carry residue from recent repainting or cleaning products. The card should note curing time, direct sun exposure, and whether the application area sits near kitchens, bathrooms, or open shop doors.

Details to capture on site
Note the substrate, wall age, finish coat, and any failures visible at corners or joins. Add measurements for the usable area and mention trims, sockets, counters, or frames that affect the artwork position.
Store the completed Substrate Card with the artwork file and approval record for that location. When sign-off is requested, the card gives buyers and installers a quick view of the surface decision behind the selected wall-art method.
